In the Spotlight: A look back at our recent events – January to March 2025

A workshop on the discoverability of French-language cultural content, two world-class events and two webinars on specific themes… the new year is off to a flying start for CEIMIA. Dive into the details of our flagship activities of last quarter!

Paris AI Action Summit

Last February 10 and 11, Paris was the scene of a major event; the AI Action Summit. This international meeting, held at the Élysée Palace, brought together key players in the world of artificial intelligence, including political leaders, renowned researchers, representatives of influential companies and members of civil society.

Alongside the summit, the Network of Centers for International Cooperation in AI – a collaboration between CEIMIA, Inria and NICT – organized an official event marking the launch of their activities for the year 2025. This side event offered a privileged exchange platform for experts from the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), enabling them to meet, share their work and define strategic directions for future projects.

World Cannes AI Festival

Last February at the World AI Cannes Festival 2025, GPAI Co-leads, mentors and mentees of the Scaling Responsible AI Solutions program participated in a panel on how mentorship fosters responsible AI innovation. The session focused on the value of expert mentorship in overcoming the challenges of scaling AI ethically, while ensuring transparency and fairness. At the end of the Session, Orange Innovation Poland, the participating team, received the Responsible AI Changemaker Certificate for their remarkable work on Satisfaction Recognition for Virtual Agents and Personality AI.

“State of AI Governance and the Need for Regulatory and Technical Interoperability” webinar

In February 2025, CEIMIA hosted the first  webinar of its AI interoperability series: “State of AI Governance and the Need for Regulatory and Technical Interoperability”. Bringing together leading voices from Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (AMII), Microsoft Ireland, the Schwartz Reisman Institute, and CEIMIA, the discussion explored how to harmonize governance frameworks standards and guidelines. Key takeaways included the growing need for third-party audits, the role of ISO/IEC standards in enabling interoperability, and the value of borrowing models from other regulated industries.

In the next webinar, panelists will discuss how other, more established sectors have experienced the need for regulatory interoperability and what they did to address this need. They will also analyze the successes and failures of these cases, with the aim of identifying lessons to consider when implementing regulatory and technical interoperability for AI governance.

"AI for Sustainable Food and Agriculture" webinar

On March 20, CEIMIA co-hosted the webinar “AI for Sustainable Food and Agriculture” with the IEEE Technology Center for Climate (ITCC). This event brought together voices from policy, industry, and academia to explore the role of AI in improving productivity, sustainability, and resilience in agri-food systems. Speakers shared concrete examples of how AI supports sustainable soil management, precision agriculture, and better-informed decision-making. The session also addressed critical challenges such as data access and environmental impacts, and offered pathways toward more equitable and environmentally sound food systems.

Interdisciplinary workshop: understanding the legal framework for practical discoverability tools in Quebec

That same day, CEIMIA participated in a workshop on the AI and discoverability project with its partners, to gain understanding of the legal obligations, in Quebec, of the various solutions developed as part of the project. This research project is led by the Cyberjustice Laboratory of the Université de Montréal, in partnership with CEIMIA and Mitacs

The teams first presented an overview of their intentions for the technical implementation of solutions for the discoverability of French-language cultural content: a responsible recommendation system incorporating a notion of discoverability measurement, a conversational robot for the discoverability of French-language cultural content, and a case study in the use of AI in the automatic generation of metadata.

This was followed by a number of questions on potential legal implications, with a focus on copyright, privacy and data protection, as well as responsible AI.
